SharePoint 2010 - Service Pack 1 All the GOOD stuff!
From the SharePoint Team BLOG-
Author: Bill Baer, Senior Technical Product Manager, Microsoft Corporation
Service Pack 1 will introduce long awaited Site Recycle Bin functionality that enables self-service recovery of site collections and sites. In the past IT Professionals were tasked with restoring entire databases to recover deleted site collections and sites and would generally require expensive restore environments to support the task. Now in Service Pack 1 administrators can quickly and easily recover site collections and sites accidentally deleted by their owners in a process similar to that of the Recycle Bin we have for Lists, Libraries, and Documents.
Author: Bill Baer, Senior Technical Product Manager, Microsoft Corporation
As we near the release of Service Pack 1 in late June 2011 we wanted to take a moment to share some of the important new functionality that will be brought to SharePoint 2010 with Service Pack 1. Service Pack 1 represents stability, performance, and security enhancements that are a direct result of your feedback and designed to extend the value you are experiencing with SharePoint 2010.
At this time we’re ready to share some of these improvements and as we move closer to late June 2011 we’ll be providing additional insight into additional functionality and specific fixes.
Site Recycle Bin
Service Pack 1 will introduce long awaited Site Recycle Bin functionality that enables self-service recovery of site collections and sites. In the past IT Professionals were tasked with restoring entire databases to recover deleted site collections and sites and would generally require expensive restore environments to support the task. Now in Service Pack 1 administrators can quickly and easily recover site collections and sites accidentally deleted by their owners in a process similar to that of the Recycle Bin we have for Lists, Libraries, and Documents.
Shallow Copy
If you’re using Remote BLOB Storage you’ve probably realized that when moving Site Collections (Move-SPSite) between content databases each unit of unstructured data (BLOB) was round tripped (I.e. uploaded and subsequently downloaded again) serially during the move. This operation was both time consuming and resource intensive. In Service Pack 1 we reduce that overhead by enabling “shallow copy” when moving Site Collections between databases where Remote BLOB Storage is used. New Shallow Copy functionality with the Move-SPSite CmdLet enables moving site collections between content databases without moving the underlying unstructured data, i.e. Microsoft Word documents, PowerPoint Presentations, etc. significantly increasing performance and reliability for organizations using Remote BLOB Storage by simply updating the pointers to those objects in the destination content database.
StorMan.aspx
In SharePoint 2010 we removed StorMan.aspx (Storage Space Allocation) (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982587/EN-US) which in previous versions of SharePoint enabled granular management and insight into storage. For example, the page would show you the top 100 documents or document libraries in terms of size. With that information end users could the page to clean up content from their site(s) by deleting the large content that they no longer needed. In Service Pack 1 we are bringing back an improved StorMan.aspx, enabling users to better understand where their quota is going and act upon that information to reduce the size of their sites.
New enhancements will improve the way you interact with information in SharePoint 2010. Service Pack 1 adds support for working with SharePoint and the Office Web Applications using Internet Explorer 9 and the Google Chrome browser (for a complete list of supported browsers for SharePoint 2010 see also http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263526.aspx), support for Open Document Format documents, and more.
NOTE
The plan browser support articles on TechNet for SharePoint Foundation 2010 and SharePoint Server 2010 will be updated with the new browser support information as Service Pack 1 nears release in late June 2011.
In addition to the new functionality Service Pack 1 provides, as with all Service Packs, it will include a number of fixes designed to improve your experience with SharePoint 2010 and will include all Cumulative and Public Updates through the April 2011 Cumulative Update.
The data below is an accumulated list of all 2010 fixes that have already shipped. These will be included in our Service Pack 1 release. This is a combination of Cumulative Updates and Public Updates. In addition to what is listed below, Service Pack 1 will contain more fixes in each product. Between now and the time of release, we will publish more details about the coming changes.
- SharePoint Server 2010 February 2011 Cumulative Update
- SharePoint Foundation 2011 February Cumulative Update
- SharePoint Server 2010 December Cumulative Update
- SharePoint Foundation 2010 December 2010 Cumulative Update
- SharePoint Server 2010 October 2010 Cumulative Update
- SharePoint Foundation 2010 October 2010 Cumulative Update
- SharePoint Server 2010 August 2010 Cumulative Update
- SharePoint Foundation 2010 August 2010 Cumulative Update
- SharePoint Server 2010 June 2010 Cumulative Update (there was no consolidated update provided for June 2010)

PerformancePointing: Performance Point Services 2010 Limitations - Micr...
Performance Point Services 2010 Limitations - Microsoft Business Intelligence by Nishant - Site Home - MSDN Blogs
Some limitations of PPS according to Nishant. My biggest limitation with the product is it no longer includes Proclarity, and they’re still trying to catch up with the features of that tool.
Customers I worked with loved Proclarity and I found it easy to use and navigate, and features like custom sets, decomp trees and heat maps were very powerful. MS really needs a desktop tool for their BI stack, outside of Excel. Perhaps Project Crescent might deliver on that, within a Silverlight smart client.

No Need for a Cognitive Map: Decentralized Memory for Insect Navigation
ABSTRACT: In many animals the ability to navigate over long distances is an important prerequisite for foraging. For example, it is widely accepted that desert ants and honey bees, but also mammals, use path integration for finding the way back to their home site. It is however a matter of a long standing debate whether animals in addition are able to acquire and use so called cognitive maps. Such a ‘map’, a global spatial representation of the foraging area, is generally assumed to allow the animal to find shortcuts between two sites although the direct connection has never been travelled before. Using the artificial neural network approach, here we develop an artificial memory system which is based on path integration and various landmark guidance mechanisms (a bank of individual and independent landmark-defined memory elements). Activation of the individual memory elements depends on a separate motivation network and an, in part, asymmetrical lateral inhibition network. The information concerning the absolute position of the agent is present, but resides in a separate memory that can only be used by the path integration subsystem to control the behaviour, but cannot be used for computational purposes with other memory elements of the system. Thus, in this simulation there is no neural basis of a cognitive map. Nevertheless, an agent controlled by this network is able to accomplish various navigational tasks known from ants and bees and often discussed as being dependent on a cognitive map. For example, map-like behaviour as observed in honey bees arises as an emergent property from a decentralized system. This behaviour thus can be explained without referring to the assumption that a cognitive map, a coherent representation of foraging space, must exist. We hypothesize that the proposed network essentially resides in the mushroom bodies of the insect brain. read more...

Increasingly, scientific breakthroughs will be powered by advanced computing capabilities that help researchers manipulate and explore massive datasets.
The speed at which any given scientific discipline advances will depend on how well its researchers collaborate with one another, and with technologists, in areas of eScience such as databases, workflow management, visualization, and cloud computing technologies.
In The Fourth Paradigm: Data-Intensive Scientific Discovery, the collection of essays expands on the vision of pioneering computer scientist Jim Gray for a new, fourth paradigm of discovery based on data-intensive science and offers insights into how it can be fully realized.

BI used to mean something..., well done Elad Israeli
Just Another Fool with a Tool
— Once, when Business Intelligence (BI) wasn't a multi-billion dollar industry, it was an idyllic concept which revolved around enabling an analytic approach to business decision making. That's what made me fall in love with BI over 10 years ago and what, in my view, gives the BI space its misty glow.
At the heart of the Business Intelligence concept lies the seemingly trivial ability to get answers to important questions. The CEO may ask the CFO how quarterly sales look compared to the previous year, and the online marketer may ask himself to which landing page they should direct new traffic for maximum conversions. To each of them, their question is equally important and has great impact on their course of action.

Usability Improvements
This update features several usability improvements that we hope will make it easier to navigate and use the training kit:
•The master configuration wizard no longer auto-starts and can be launched manually from the Prerequisites page if needed. This makes it easier to use individual demos or hands-on labs without having to install the prerequisites for the entire training kit.
•Remote SQL Server instances are now supported for many demos and hands on labs. Unfortunately we were not able to add support for remote SharePoint 2010 installations. This still requires manual intervention.
•We reworked the menu structure and content pages to improve navigation and discovery of content.
•We added a desktop shortcut to the main training kit page (default.htm).

•SQL Server 2008 Update for Developers
This content covers all the key improvements in SQL Server 2008, including new date and time data types, spatial data types, FILESTREAM, Transact-SQL improvements and support for .NET CLR assemblies. You can find it by navigating to the SQL Server 2008 - Overview page.
