What is Business Intelligence?
What is Business Intelligence?
What is The Third Eye
">
Business Intelligence
is a natural part of every organization, but it’s a “meta” organ. In other
words: it consists of all the data and mind working together as a larger more
powerful sensory organ. Business Intelligence is a very clever bit of natural
evolution: a meta organ designed to data, connect to patterns and then relay
that data back in overlays of information on top of your other data.
Once opened it’s a
very powerful ability, powerful enough that it literally can drive people
insane if not understood, accepted or developed correctly. Also due to lack of
understanding more people than not mislabel, run away from the ability or take
it to strange descriptions… which further muck and murk the waters of what Business
Intelligence truly is.
Business Intelligence as a dataset can be used in many different ways. It opens up our data to patterns around us. It’s used by an organization to make connections and answer questions. Knowledge workers use the data to make intelligent decisions. It’s part of the process where an organization can change and effect qualitative, less quantitative efficiencies within departments. Many other examples exist for how people use Business Intelligence.

Meaningful use Stage 2 crunch starts now | Healthcare IT News
INDIAN WELLS, CA – The federal government may have delayed the start of Stage 2 of meaningful use by a year, to 2014, but that does not mean healthcare providers should relax in their pursuit of the intended goals of theEHR incentive program, namely better, safer healthcare at lower cost.
"There's still a bit of a timing issue even though we have some relief," Pam McNutt, senior vice president and CIO for Dallas-based Methodist Health System, said at the annual College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) Fall CIO Forum.

SQL Server 2012 Database Recovery Advisor: Simplified Point in Time Recovery - SQLServerCentral
By Jonathan Kehayias, 2012/07/13
The aim of the new Database Recovery Advisor in SQL Server 2012 is to simplify the task of piecing together a recovery sequence from multiple backup files, comprising full, differential, and log backups. My previous article, Simplified Restores with SQL Server 2012 Recovery Advisor, explained how to use the tool to fully recover a database from a multiple backup files that originated from multiple servers. In this article, I'll demonstrate how the tool also makes it easier to plan for, and perform, a point in time recovery from a series of backups, in order to recover data that may have been lost due to an application bug, or user error.

Using MS Project to Set-up your Project for Success « PM-Foundations
Using MS Project to Set-up your Project for Success « PM-Foundations
Project managers that are not as familiar with using tools like MS Project to create a project schedule often “dive in head first” creating their project schedule. These project managers open a new file, start furiously loading project tasks, and the project schedule evolves as project planning progresses. After the project schedule baseline is established, and project execution begins, these project managers begin the weekly battle to maintain the project schedule in a manner that keeps it close to reflecting reality. Some of the telltale signs that your schedule is difficult to maintain include:
- You change the dependency on a task and the dates do not change
- You extend the duration and the work hours do not change
- You add a new resource and the dates change unexpectedly
- Your schedule shows people working on Thanksgiving and Christmas
- Durations are displayed in hours, and work is displayed in minutes
I was working with a project manager whose schedule had become so difficult to maintain that he declared that his “tool had become compromised”. This created much frustration for the project manager, but the even worse result was that he was not sure that the milestone commitments established in the schedule were correct or achievable (and he did not know how to fix it).
Obviously, how well the WBS is organized has a significant impact on the ability to effectively and efficiently maintain the schedule throughout the project life cycle. In addition, there are several set-up activities within MS Project that allow the project manager to tailor the project schedule to meet their needs. Paying attention to these set-up activities when the project is first created allows you to better understand and control the behaviors within the schedule as you update the project schedule to reflect progress. The set-up tips described below include defining the project start date and project calendar, establishing default schedule options, and entering your project resources.

Scientists turn skin cells into beating heart muscle - Health - Heart health - msnbc.com
Scientists have for the first time succeeded in taking skin cells from patients with heart failure and transforming them into healthy, beating heart tissue that could one day be used to treat the condition.
The researchers, based in Haifa, Israel, said there were still many years of testing and refining ahead. But the results meant they might eventually be able to reprogram patients' cells to repair their own damaged hearts.
"We have shown that it's possible to take skin cells from an elderly patient with advanced heart failure and end up with his own beating cells in a laboratory dish that are healthy and young - the equivalent to the stage of his heart cells when he was just born," said Lior Gepstein from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, who led the work.
The researchers, whose study was published in the European Heart Journal on Wednesday, said clinical trials of the technique could begin within 10 years.

Category: SharePoint storage
"Business is business and business must grow.”
-Once-ler from The Lorax by Dr. Seuss.
Your feedback was clear: “We need more online storage and it needs to be cheaper.”
So we adjusted the SharePoint Online service accordingly—both in per tenant storage quota limits and the cost of additional storage. Now, you can be less constrained as you plan your content management strategy and determine how and where you share files and manage projects.
Tenant storage quota limit increase—Now up to 25 terabytes(TB)
Individual customers (tenants) can now consume up to 25TB of data and content, compared to the previous per tenant limit of 5TB. As a result, storage limits are no longer such a barrier. Go ahead and create new documents, share them, version them, move them from DRAFT to FINAL, review and approve them, populate lists, publish forms, generate new sites, upload marketing assets, create company-wide Document Centers, design your company intranet, and more.
Additional storage costs decrease—A 92 percent price reduction
Along with the recent price reductions across Office 365, the SharePoint Online additional storage add-on has decreased by 92 percent effective immediately. The reduction translates to a drop from U.S. $2.50 per GB/month, to $0.20 per GB/month. Yes, you read that right—20 cents each month. So if you need more storage than you originally received by default, go ahead. You won’t break the bank.

Creating Chart Reports in SSRS SQL Server 2008 R2 — DatabaseJournal.com
SQL Server Reporting Services provides several ways to analyze data; one of them is creating Chart reports. With Chart reports you can analyze the aggregated information (either on small or large volumes of data) at a glance. But before you start creating Chart reports it’s essential to understand and prepare the data to be analyzed so that you can choose the appropriate chart type and create the report quickly and efficiently.
In this article, I am going to demonstrate how you can go about creating, modifying and beautifying the chart report easily and quickly.
Creating a Chart Report in BIDS (Business Intelligence Development Studio)
If you are new to SSRS or you are creating an SSRS project for the first time, the first thing that you need to do is to create an SSRS project. To do that, go to START -> All Programs -> SQL Server 2008 R2 (if you have installed SQL Server 2008 R2) and click on SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio. On the New Project dialog box select the "Report Server Project" template and then specify the name and location for the project as shown below:

Metro Style Site Directory for SharePoint Using EMCAScript - Fear and Loathing
Metro Style Site Directory for SharePoint Using EMCAScript - Fear and Loathing
Metro Style Site Directory for SharePoint Using EMCAScript
I’ve always been trying to come up with a useful and clever way to allow users to navigate around SharePoint sites. Recently I put together an “Application Directory” which basically displayed a menu system to navigate around apps. Using the JavaScript Class Library for SharePoint to pull values out of SharePoint I quickly put together something that normally would be a lot of C# code and a web part.
The EMCAScript object model is powerful in that you can quickly pull data out of SharePoint sites and lists and make a pleasant user experience with just a little JavaScript, CSS, HTML, and jQuery. It still will make a call back to the server to fetch the data but it’s done asynchronously so the perception to the user is almost seamless.
This post walks you through building a site directory of sorts. It could be used as a landing page on a top level site collection or as a web part sitting on a team site (to show the contents below the site). It’s up to you but the net result is a nice navigation system (done with a little “Metro” styling) all done in a hundred lines of JavaScript.

Bright-Green.com: How To Estimate A Software Project
There are many, many ways to estimate a software project, ranging from formal models that can only be worked by a University professor through to a salesperson's hopeful guess.
Here we present a simple, proven software project estimation method that produces reasonably accurate results and has been used estimate substantial fixed price work.
This method is based on a quick but robust initial design on the premise that later versions of the design will reduce the amount of work as developers come up with smart ideas for saving work.
This method also calls for participation by a substantial number of people, increasing buy-in and gaining accuracy. It also follows the principles of the Cardboard Checklist for Planning, where relevant.

Scientists produce stronger T-rays, bring Tricorders closer to reality
Scientists produce stronger T-rays, bring Tricorders closer to reality
A group of scientists from Imperial College London and Singapore's Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) have developed a new technique that could have far reaching impacts for Star Trekfans everywhere. It all involves something known as Terahertz (THz), or T-rays: electromagnetic rays that have already been used in full-body airport scanners and have the potential to be used across a much broader range of medical and environmental applications. Because every molecule can be uniquely identified within the THz range, these T-rays can be used to pick up on cancerous cells and other biological matter, perhaps even within a Tricorder-like scanner. Now, Imperial College's Stefan Maier and his team of scientists say they've found a way to create a stronger beam of T-rays, using so-called "nano-antennas" to generate an amplified THz field. In fact, this field can produce about 100 times more power than most other THz sources, which could allow for sharper imaging devices. "T-rays promise to revolutionize medical scanning to make it faster and more convenient, potentially relieving patients from the inconvenience of complicated diagnostic procedures and the stress of waiting for accurate results," Maier explained. "Thanks to modern nanotechnology and nanofabrication, we have made a real breakthrough in the generation of T-rays that takes us a step closer to these new scanning devices." For more details, check out the links below.
